8 Basic SEO Practices

SEO, some hates some loves. But fact lies in the practices, below listed are few basic activities which should be taken into considerations while optimizing your web page.

The Title Tag: This is the most important factor if you want to make your webpage ranked in search engine listings. Use your keywords once here if possible twice, as per my understandings with search engine starting 65-70 characters with spaces are of importance.
Meta Description & Meta Keywords: Google uses description in its search results, so keep it optimized with your keywords and please don’t stuff the keywords unnecessarily. Use your key phrase and long trail of your keywords in keywords Meta tag.
Text: Remember while doing SEO, Content is the king. Use content on your page, this content should have enough of your keywords; I suggest a page to be limited to three key phrases to be optimized for. Sometimes owner of projects who are not aware of SEO demands same page to be ranked for different keywords. Laugh Loudly.
The URL: now, let’s talk about URL optimization, what’s it? Nothing special but to have the name of your webpage according to your major keyword for the page. E.g. lets suppose we are going to make a page for golden triangle tours so the page name should be www.yourdomain.com/india-tours/golden-triangle-tour.html
HTML Tags: different html tags have importance. H1, H2, Bold, Strong, Italic, keep your key phrases in these tags. Placements of these tags have importance so be careful where to place and test with the crawler view.
Links: a page may have inbound and outbound links, no of inbound links should be greater than no of outbound links.
IMG Alt Tags: Your images should be described via ALT Tags with the keywords you are optimizing for - If your image is hosted on your web-host, the file name of the images should also be SEO’d — If you have an image about polar bears have it be polar-bear.jpg in your images folder.
Keyword Density: 8% is excellent and doesn’t seem spammy, if you have a 500 word article, then 40 of those words should have variances of the search term you are targeting, if this seems excessive, lower the keyword density down to 5% and you will only need to add 25 variances/instances of your keyword. And that’s just a start… (Keyword prominence is big, but not worth a discussion).

Start doing SEO of your site and keep visiting this blog, soon you will see improvement in your search engine rankings.

Branding at Web

I remember one funny incident once happened, and wow its was a great thing and any business newspaper might chose the words if said by any great businessmen.
After a long break we friends were meeting at a place where we used to meet regularly in college days, by now everyone has earned university degrees. Trying to know what we are doing in professional life one asked this question “Sumit, what are you doing now a days?” and sumit answered proudly “I completed MBA and now a days I am a sales person for Onida, a TV manufacturing giant those days”

Laughing loudly he said after hearing from Sumit, balls… what the hell you are selling, you are only a facilitator, Onida has its own reach in its target audience, if are a true sales person, sell my soap(this guy is the owner of a local soap used to wash clothes in rural areas of India).

Story ends here, but words never end. He was right actually, and for me sales and marketing in traditional approach and web approach are same. Difference is of only platform.

So if you own a website and have enough budgets to reach to your audience using traditional ways of promotion like TV commercials, Print media Ads, I can tell you who is going to be blamed for not putting enough efforts as expected. It’s the one who is doing SEO for your website.

Your analytics data may give enough insight story of this, see carefully with what keyword or variation of keywords people are finding you on search engines, I hope it will be your brand name. And as your website becomes old and you got more hits over the time from search engines and have done basic optimization like Meta and Title optimization, you will find your site ranked with long trails of main keywords.

I have worked in coordination on a lots of web project from scratch, and found one interesting thing that where a web analyst was involved in strategic planning of the project, who knows all about SEO, PPC and other web based promotion activities, those projects tasted the success.

On the other hand, if project belongs to some already existing brand, it took only few days to get good traffic.

So, who should be the first person to contact when you are going to launch a new website or a new feature in your website? Your web analyst, because only he knows from where people are landing on site, what they are doing on the site, he can tell you the untold story.

And who may be the strategy maker for your website, if he does have the knowledge of finance, again a web analyst.

And who can be a web analyst? Anyone, who has interests in mathematics,
What should a web analyst must know? SEO.

Do you need a Web Nominee??

I have a good question in mind, but let me tell you a story first.

John one of my good friend was doing a lots of online activities, all of a sudden one day. something happened to him and he was no more leaving us in a great grief and sadness, we, friends are fine and busy in life again but those whom he used to support , dependent of him are not that much well.

When I came to know about this miss happening, I rushed to his family, visited his parents, his widow and two kids, they were sad and more than that they were tensed, Now What??? The big question mark was there.

Thank god I was aware that John was doing online business and has lots of money in his online accounts and fortunately I had access to those accounts being his mutually accepted partner. I told about this to them, it couldn’t bring a laughter but a caring smile was there, John is no more but he has done enough in his life to support his family
.

What’s special to this story? The above told story is not true. Thank god its not.
Bad time may come to anyone, but how many of us are as lucky or ready as John was.

Well, I pray nothing such happen to anyone, but it may,
But still, it’s a good one to remind us that we should be prepared for such things.

Let’s turn to Google,

Google has changed the world, certainly YES. Google has changed the way we do business; Google has changed the traditional pattern of earning. Big YES
Google has already done so much for social cause, supported Orkut, and supported Youtube. J
What a great contribution to society, and above that the Search Engine it gives access all free to any one. Every thing is great about Google.

We started to use internet as a source of income not more than 15-20 years ago, and made millions of $$$ in recent past with the emergence of google

Those who work on internet and earns through internet may have various accounts across the web, to list few

- any email account
- paypal account
- affiliate account
- adsense kind of account

So, our whole process should be changed now, we should have nominees for our online assets. I think it makes sense and major players even Google itself should ask us a nominee’s name when we do register ourselves. There may be certain criteria based on which it can be decided when a account needs a nominee

- age of account ( in case of general account)
- a regular income pattern, must have reached a level (adsense, affiliate)
- paypal sort of account should have a nominee.

Every one has taken enough cautions while opening a bank account, registering a Fixed deposit, investing in to shares and all other moveable non moveable property assets, but a big BUT what about your web?

May be I am writing nonsense, but it makes sense.
